Made In China – (Mixed Media)

It’s called “Made In China.” It has NOTHING to do with China or the Chinese. It really has to do with my/our? seemingly insatiable appetite for single use plastic items or items that are wrapped in plastic or placed in plastic bags. Somewhere along the line there was a huge influx of made-in-China junk in the U.S. Also, since I was a kid, there just seems to be this idea that quick and simple means use once and discard. There is no recycling all this trash. I decided to devise a way to chronicle my plastic use and began to build this flag out of all the little plastic boxes and bags from the stuff I bought. A funny thing happened, though, on the way to finishing it. I began to run out of material. I’ve decided it is finished even though slightly unfinished. It served its purpose. It made me more aware. Like Maya Angelou said – “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” It’s called “Made In China” but it’s really about me being more aware of what I am adding to my planet.
